Carol Peterssen

Carol Sue Peterssen passed peacefully on August 18, 2016 surrounded by her family while watching her favorite movie It’s a Wonderful Life. Daughter of Francis E. Stuyvesant and Dorothea E. Ellis, Carol was born in Brooklyn, NY on June 15, 1940. Her childhood began in Hempstead, later the family moved to Floral Park and then Hicksville where together with her siblings, Frank R. Stuyvesant and I’leen Carr, they enjoyed stickball games and trips upstate to the “brownie cabin” on Lake Champlain. After graduating from Hicksville H.S. in 1957; Carol worked as a secretary at AIL. This is where she met Donald Peterssen. They were married on March 6, 1977. A stepmother to Kurt and Bob Peterssen, her daughter Donna Mathes was born in November of that same year. They raised their children in their home in Huntington Station. Once Donna was in grade school Carol returned to work where she would find her passion of working with children with special needs for over 30 years she served as a Paraprofessional Aide at Birchwood Elementary School in South Huntington. Adored by coworkers and loved by students, she has left a legacy in her community of caring for and helping others. Carol thoroughly enjoyed reading; she was South Huntington Public Library’s best patron. She also liked to crochet stuffed animals for kids, blankets and other items she would give as gifts. She enjoyed playing games like Canasta, Yahtzee, and doing jig saw puzzles. She was a member of a bowling league for several years, and a dedicated Girl Scout leader continuing to serve even after Donna was no longer involved. Of all her hobbies some would argue that her favorite was watching the Mets play or listening to them on AM radio. LET’S GO METS! She loved and adored her grandchildren Bazil and Elsie Mathes. Nothing made her happier than doting on them and spoiling them with gifts. The kids in turn looked forward to their annual summer trip to grandma’s house where they would joke and play for hours together. “Every time a bell rings…an angel gets his wings”. Her family invites you to join them in celebrating her life. A wake will be held at A.L. Jacobsen’s Funeral Home in Huntington Station, NY on Sunday, August 21st from 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm. Mass will be held at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church in Melville, NY, where she was a member, on Monday, August 22nd at 9:30am. An interment service at the Saint Charles Cemetery in E. Farmingdale, NY will follow. Caring for her husband was Carol’s priority until the end.
