Leo Michael Kearney

Leo Michael Kearney of New York, NY, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2025, at the age of 92, in Huntington, NY. Born on March 2, 1933, in Malden, Massachusetts, Leo was the cherished only child of Eileen Noone Kearney and Leo Kearney. From the beginning, he brought immense joy to his parents and carried that same lighthearted spirit throughout his life. Leo proudly served his country in the United States Navy for eight years, after which he pursued his passion for learning—earning a Bachelor’s degree from Boston College and a Master’s degree from Fordham University. His love for education and deep curiosity led him to a fulfilling career as a professor of Economics at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, where he inspired countless students over the years. With a sharp wit and an ever-ready sense of humor, Leo had a gift for making others laugh. His one-liners were legendary, and his warmth was felt by all who knew him. He loved music and often sang with joy, and he found great peace in the arts—especially the opera. He adored spending time near the ocean, particularly at Brighton Beach, and enjoyed fishing, reading, and the company of good friends and family. Leo’s life was rooted in love, laughter, and generosity. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a joyful grandfather and friend to many. Leo is survived by his beloved wife, Olga Kearney, and his children: Kim Kearney, Sean Kearney (Melissa), Michael Kearney (Jennifer), Murielle Bedard (Antoine), Ernest Gaston, and Dominic Gaston (Kenya). He was a proud and loving grandfather to Nicolette, Dalton, Kevin, Collin, Declan, Donovan, Phillip (Nicole), Christopher, Jaiden, and Savannah. He also loved his great grandchildren Miles and Emmanuel. Leo also leaves behind his dear goddaughters, Grace Coicou-Ambrosino (Christopher), along with their children Christian and Valentina, along with Geraldine Wynne. He will be lovingly remembered by a wide circle of family and friends across the United States and Ireland. A man of deep faith, Leo lived his life with gratitude and grace. In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated. A Memorial Mass celebrating his life will be held on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at 5:15 PM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations in Leo’s memory to the church would be sincerely appreciated. Leo was deeply loved, and his kind spirit, generous heart, and joyful presence will be remembered always.
