Robert Gordon

Born in Brooklyn January 6th, 1936, to James Duncan Gordon and Elizabeth Crumb Gordon, younger brother to James, Robert Ewing Gordon lived a fuller life than most. You might say, he did it his way... Growing up collecting coal along the tracks to help his family stay warm Bob decided he was going to make it his own way and with determination and an exceptionally sharp mind, he did. He was accepted into Brooklyn Technical HS but was far too smart to finish. They had in fact run out of things to teach him. He then joined the US Armed Forces and spent 2 years overseas in Austria doing a variety of jobs, his favorite of which was drawing illustrations for the newsletter. He continued to doodle till the very end. Usually on napkins. He later started to work for Mueller Steam Specialty, helping with engineering issues and drafting, eventually working his way up to Vice President before they moved to North Carolina which prompted him to open his own business Piping Specialties. He maintained a long-standing relationship with Mueller as one of the best in the industry from 1976 till present day. His biggest passion in life was flying, we often joke that he couldn't function at sea level. After traveling once by private plane - he decided it was the only way to travel and quickly got his pilot's license. For over 50 years Bob continued to travel the country in his twin engine baron. Flying was not only a passion, it was a major connection to some of his closest friends. He was a friend and mentor to many pilots and student pilots over the years. His love of flying also extended to his love of being able to help people. He donated many hours in his plane to foundations such as Angel Flight, PALS, Wounded Warriors and AARF which he very much enjoyed, rescuing dogs from kill shelters and giving them a second chance at life. You can tell a lot about the character of a person by the way they treat animals, and our dad loved them all. In addition to flying Bob loved all kinds of toys, his vast car collection, motorcycle, boat, quad... Even in his later age you would often find him pulling strangers out of snowbanks or driving the quad around his property, or neighborhood taking every opportunity to give his grandkids a ride. Above all else, Bob loved his family, his friends, travel and maybe a good martini... He was a devoted husband for over 55 years to Marcy and a loving father to his daughters Barbara and Lindsay. Family meant everything to him. He was incredibly proud of his daughters, four grandchildren, Patrick, Daniel, Scarlett & Robert and his four great grandchildren, Maggie, Ruby, Rowan and Paisley. He carried that pride with him every day. He will be so greatly missed but we will always carry his love, sense of determination, cheeky sense of humor and his spirit for adventure.
