Deirdre E. Cullen

Deirdre (Walsh) Cullen of Greenwich Village passed away peacefully on January 10, 2026 after a year’s long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Deirdre was born on August 3, 1955 in Bay Shore, New York, the third child of Edward and Anne Walsh. She attended Secatogue Elementary school and West Islip High School where she excelled in academics and public speaking. Deirdre earned a degree in political science from Molloy College in Rockville Centre, New York in 1977. While at Molloy, Deirdre was chosen to participate in a congressional intern program in Washington, D.C. Although she was born and raised on Long Island, Deirdre was at heart a true New Yorker. After graduation, she worked in retail and hospitality in New York City. It was in Greenwich Village that she met the love of her life, Barry Cullen, the proprietor of The Sazerac House Restaurant. They were married in 1992. Together they brought joy and warmth to a community they both loved. Deirdre loved everything about New York City: the museums, theaters, food; but most especially the people. And her generous spirit and amazingly quick wit and sense of humor drew people to her. She had a real gift for making others feel welcome, known, and loved. Deirdre was predeceased by her husband, Barry and her youngest brother John Walsh. Deirdre is survived by her stepdaughters Kim, Andrea, and Laura; step sons-in-law David and Patrick; step granddaughter Hannah Cullen, and her husband Ian Noël, brothers Brian Walsh and his wife Laura, Edward Walsh; sister Kathryn O’Reilly and her husband Christopher; nieces Caroline O’Reilly, Meredith Byers and her husband Ralph, Anna Walsh; nephew Kevin O’Reilly; and grandnephew and niece Sean and Lilly Byers. A visitation will be held at A.L. Jacobsen Funeral Home, 1380 New York Avenue, Huntington Station, NY 11746 on February 21 from 2-4 pm.
