**In Loving Memory of Dr. Guan Hiok Yu** March 5, 1944 – October 29, 2023 With profound sorrow, we bid farewell to our beloved Dr. Guan-Hiok Yu. Born on March 5, 1944, in the vibrant city of Manila, Philippines, Guan's journey was nothing short of remarkable. After receiving his medical degree from National Taiwan University on a full scholarship, with visions of a brighter future and $200 to his name, Guan made the bold decision to immigrate to the United States in the 1970s. What he carried with him was more valuable than any material wealth: ambition, resilience, and a dream. Dedicating over half a century to the medical profession, Dr. Yu specialized in physical medicine and rehabilitation. For 51 years, he served at VA hospitals across New York, Texas, Ohio, and Tennessee, touching the lives of countless veterans. His commitment to his adopted homeland was also evident in his 20 years of service as a US Army reservist. Outside of his professional life, Guan was an admirer of the arts. His soul resonated with the melodies of opera, and he found solace and joy in the tales of Chinese cinema. Yet, above all his accomplishments, his role as a devoted and selfless husband, father, and grandfather remained paramount. For 48 cherished years, he was the loving husband of Carmen, a doting father to Catherine, Christine, Cindy, Anthony, and John, and an adored grandfather to Nicholas, Alex, Maddy, Jason, Charlotte, Cameron, Emma, Noah, Audrey, Chasen, and Jacob. His legacy is not just in the patients he helped but in the love and lessons he imparted to his family, the stories shared, and the memories created. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Rest in peace, dear Guan. Your journey on this earth was truly inspiring, and your memory will forever be etched in our hearts. We love you Gong-Gong.
